Kinja'd!!!

I’ve been racing for the past year in the NorCal bike races (road races and Crits and I’ve seen a lot of cool cars and a weird pattern going on with wagons.)

Kinja'd!!!

Lots of subarus, the base models are usually driven by younger guys but STIs and WRXs are pretty common with the 40 ish crowd.

Kinja'd!!!

The E63 AMG wagon. Glorious turbo’d V8 and a lot of power. I saw 2 today.

Kinja'd!!!

Priuses are here and there, but occasionally you see a old school Impala SS.

Kinja'd!!!

Lots of BMWs. Saw 2 F11 328i wagons, various X3/X5, and a rather rare e46 Wagon.

Kinja'd!!!

Lots of Subie hatches as well as craptons of TDI wagons.

Kinja'd!!!

Aaaaaaannnd we have an avalanche.

That new impreza is just so ugly. It’s like they didn’t ever bother to look at the back.

These are the cars of bike races and triathlon events everywhere, I think. Endurance sports like these tend draw a certain demographic. The people tend to be fairly affluent as the equipment (read: bikes) have a fairly high cost of admittance. I notice similar vehicles (Subaru’s, lots of German metal, wagons and combinations of those things) as triathlon events here in Ontario, Canada.

as there are expensive bikes with expensive rides, I saw a person with a Geo Metro and a very expensive bike...quite a surprise. But for my view, a lightweight aluminum frame with all 105 parts for 700$ on CL will beat a lot of these people in carbon bikes. It’s a lot about the training, and often very little about the bike (until you have reached the pro level). And i kind of expected more V6 CTS wagons and Hyundai wagons.

Yeah, it’s mostly affluent people with more expensive bikes than they really need but there are always a couple of people with bikes that are more expensive than their car. :)

Agreed on the training. You can make a far bigger difference in training vs. spending money on marginally lighter and better parts. Until you get into serious athlete shape it’s much easier and you’ll see far more benefit by shaving a couple of pounds off yourself than off your bike.
